In the Colombian city of Medellin, a new headquarters is being constructed for the Empresa de Desarrollo Urbano Urban Development Company , combining optimal thermal performance with local urban regeneration. The new EDU headquarters is the result of a three-part collaboration between the public company, the private sector, and Professor Salmaan Craig from the Harvard Graduate School of Design who has family roots in the Colombian capital. The purpose of this project is to use innovation as a tool for the renovation and revitalization of downtown Medellin, creating a socially safe territory through a healthy mix of building functions and public activity. In this dynamic, the project aims to stimulate the transformation of the city center to promote a sustainable habitat and guarantee public freedom - a dual strategy of social urbanism, and a culture of sustainability.
Guides and Case Studies for All Climates
Warmer Climate Construction and Design Considerations - Zero Energy Project
The U. Department of Energy DOE Building America program has developed a series of technology-specific case studies and best practices guides that may be applicable to all climate zones. These case studies from Building America research teams and national laboratories describe energy-saving solutions for both new and existing homes, classified into four categories. Project: Apartment Compartmentalization with an Aerosol-Based Sealing Process Technology Focus: Air sealing, building envelope Profile: In this case study, the Consortium for Advanced Residential Buildings team demonstrated the automated air sealing and compartmentalization of buildings through the use of an aerosolized sealant developed by the Western Cooling Efficiency Center at University of California Davis. Project : Application of Spray Foam Insulation Under Plywood and OSB Roof Sheathing Technology Focus: Insulation, existing homes with unvented cathedralized roofs Profile: Building Science Corporation conducted hygrothermal modeling and explorations of 11 in-service roof systems that used spray polyurethane foam to study the performance of this system for air sealing in complex assemblies, particularly roofs.
Measuring a Buildings' Vital Signs: Cold Climate Case Studies
As draws to a close, Fix asked 21 climate and justice leaders to offer their predictions for Be sure to check out the full list of predictions here. Growing up in a one-bedroom Brooklyn apartment, Donnel Baird and his family relied on a cooking stove for heat. Now, as cofounder and CEO of BlocPower , he strives to retrofit buildings across New York City with safer, greener, more efficient heating and cooling systems.
In , 35 percent of all housing units constructed in the United States were multifamily units—housing units in buildings with five or more units. Demand for multifamily options for housing is stronger than ever and reports indicate that this trend will continue for a while. Multifamily buildings, both existing and new, present a tremendous opportunity for very significant energy savings and some are going for Zero Energy status through innovative building techniques and highly efficient systems, lighting and appliances. Completed in , the building includes smart design and cutting-edge technologies to reach its goal of Zero Energy. The project uses solid numeric data to show how they reduced energy use and added solar energy to reach the Zero Energy goal:.
